Seeking praise is like planning to get drunk

Praise, reputation and honour lead neither to merit nor to longevity; they confer neither strength nor protection against disease; and they do not give bodily pleasure. They only give pleasure to the mind – and this could more easily be obtained by drunkenness, gambling and other vices.

For the benefit of acquiring praise, reputation and honour, people forgo many other benefits. They even risk their lives, Yet can words of praise be eaten? Can reputation and honour give pleasure to the dying?

Children howl with distress when their toys are broken; so adults howl when their reputation is sullied. Yet I refuse to be affected by praise or insult. If other people take delight in me, I take pleasure only in their delight.

If I were to take the praise of others to heart, I should become complacent. The sense of urgency to improve myself would be dulled. I should become jealous at those who won greater praise, and resentful at those who enjoyed greater success.

So equally those Who insult and mock me, confer on me great benefit. They save me from descending into misery.
